Industrial Yard Operator (Hamilton, ON)

Thomas Solutions is seeking a dependable Yard Attendant to support day-to-day yard, vehicle, and shop operations. This hands-on role is ideal for someone who takes pride in a safe, organized workplace and is comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

You will help maintain our fleet and facility, which includes heavy trucks, tractors, trailers, pickup trucks, cars, and UTVs. The role supports the Service and Parts teams and contributes to a positive experience for our customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct off-rent vehicle and equipment inspections, document any damage or mechanical concerns, and fuel vehicles in all weather conditions.
  • Shuttle, park and organize vehicles and equipment while keeping the yard clean, orderly and accessible.
  • Prepare rental vehicles and equipment for use, including exterior power washing and undercarriage cleaning.
  • Pick up and deliver customer vehicles, rental equipment, and automotive or truck parts as required.
  • Operate yard equipment, including tractors, skid steers, scissor lifts, boom lifts and other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
  • Attach, detach and reposition trailers and equipment using the designated yard tractor.
  • Conduct documented pre-use inspections of vehicles, tools and mobile equipment and promptly report any defects, damage or unsafe conditions.
  • Perform hands-on welding and metal fabrication using manual welding equipment and standard fabrication tools. Duties include measuring, cutting, grinding, fitting, tack welding, welding and repairing steel components. This is a physical, shop-floor fabrication role and does not involve automated, robotic or computer-controlled welding.
  • Load, unload, move, stage and secure heavy materials, equipment and fabricated components throughout the yard and shop.
  • Use grinders, saws, drills, impact tools, welding equipment and other hand and power tools.
  • Complete basic vehicle and equipment maintenance, including cleaning, greasing, checking fluid levels and replacing minor components when trained and authorized.
  • Provide general shop support and maintain safe, clean and organized yard, shop and storage areas.
  • Handle recycling, garbage, debris removal, snow and ice control, and other general yard or shop upkeep duties.
  • Perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and snow.
  • Push, pull, drag and position heavy hoses, chains, steel components, tools and other materials.
  • Follow all company health and safety procedures, equipment operating instructions and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Promptly report any vehicle, equipment, facility or safety concerns to management.
  • Perform other related yard, shop, equipment and fabrication duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with manual welding and metal fabrication, including measuring, cutting, grinding, fitting and welding steel components.
  • Experience safely operating tractors or yard tractors and manoeuvring vehicles, equipment or trailers in confined yard environments.
  • Experience operating skid steers and other yard or material-handling equipment.
  • Current Mobile Elevating Work Platform certification for the types of scissor lifts and boom lifts used at the workplace, or the ability to complete the required training before independently operating this equipment.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
  • General shop and mechanical knowledge, with experience working with trucks, trailers, rental vehicles or fleet equipment considered an asset.
  • Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment, perform routine pre-use inspections and identify or report damage, defects and maintenance concerns.
  • Experience using grinders, saws, drills, impact tools, welding equipment and other hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including regularly lifting and carrying heavy amounts of materials and pushing, pulling or positioning heavy materials and equipment.
  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, crouch, kneel, climb and reach, and work on uneven surfaces for extended periods, with accommodation where required by applicable law.
